Gearing Up for Summer 2011

Calling all female ultimate players! Tryout dates for the women's program in Ottawa have been announced. We'd like to encourage everyone to come and check out the women's competitive scene whether you're psyched to play women's ultimate this summer, assessing your options for next year, or looking to tune up your skills for the summer and throw in the wind. Tryouts are a great opportunity to meet some fun women and pick up a few new skills.

Tryouts 2011

All tryouts this season will be held at Franco Cite High School (located 623 Smyth Road).

Dates and times:
  • Monday April 18: 8:30 pm - 11 pm
  • Monday May 2: 8:30 pm - 11 pm
  • Monday May 9: 8:30 pm - 11 pm
Cost: $10 per tryout.

Bring: A light and a dark shirt with a number (both jerseys should have the same number), water, cleats, and running shoes. Note that yellow and grey are poor colour choices! Please wear the same jerseys to each tryout so we can better identify you. If you don't have shirts with numbers, please borrow some or make the numbers yourself (duct tape works well!).

What we're looking for: Competitive athletes who are focused, athletic, and looking to play some great ultimate this summer. We will be evaluating athletic ability, skills (such as throwing, cutting, marking, and defense), and fitness.

Please feel free to contact us at stellascarlett@gmail.com if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you at tryouts!

A Little More About What Playing Competitive Ultimate Entails

A fun and competitive environment! Meet and train with a team of smart and spirited women while playing ultimate at a high level. You will have fun both teaching and learning more ultimate.

Commitment Level: Full commitment is expected. Any exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. Please specify any events you can't attend on the tryout application form. In addition to the practices and tournaments outlined on the form, players are expected to train on their own and to seek appropriate care (physio, etc.) for injuries.

Schedule: Stella and Scarlett practice twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Stella has an additional mandatory fitness and throwing day on Wednesdays. Scarlett will also have a mandatory fitness and throwing session once per week outside of the Tuesday and Thursday practices. Practices run from approximately 6:30 - 8:30 pm. We also have a commitment to give back to OCUA in the form of coaching and volunteering (largely in the off-season). Each team attends 5 or 6 tournaments during the summer.

Cost: Team fees last year were about $350. That included jerseys, screening and shorts, tournament fees and player fees. Not included was the cost of travel, hotels, and food for tournaments.

Stella and Scarlett are sister teams, and we're looking forward to spending lots of time working and playing together:
  • One joint practice weekly: Stella and Scarlett will focus on the same skills and drills during one practice each week. Theory, explanations and warm up will be held together while drills will happen in parallel.
  • Scrimmage feedback: In order to solidify each player's understanding of the skills we'll be working on, each team will watch her sister team scrimmage on a bi-weekly basis. In player pairs, we will give and receive feedback as well as ask questions after each scrimmage.
  • Fitness: Stella and Scarlett will work on their fitness together during practice.
  • Joint carpooling: Gives us lots of informal time to get to know each other and talk about ultimate.
  • Player movement between teams: Some players will be offered the opportunity to play with their sister team for a tournament, to build confidence and skills.
  • Women's skills clinic: Both teams will work together to share their knowledge and experience with women playing in OCUA's leagues.
